The plans we compare for you

Four kinds of Medicare coverage, what each one actually does, and who each one suits.

Medicare Advantage

All-in-one coverage

A Medicare Advantage plan replaces Original Medicare with a single plan from a private carrier. It includes everything Part A and Part B cover, usually adds prescription coverage, and often adds benefits Original Medicare has never included.

Who it suits

Best if you want one plan, one card, and extras like dental and vision — and you're comfortable using a provider network.

What's included

  • $0 premium options in most counties
  • Hospital and medical in one plan
  • Dental, vision and hearing benefits
  • Yearly cap on out-of-pocket costs
  • Wellness and fitness programs
  • Telehealth visits

Medicare Supplement

Fills the gaps left behind

A Supplement plan sits alongside Original Medicare and pays the copays, coinsurance and deductibles it leaves you with. The plans are standardized by letter, so Plan G from one carrier covers exactly what Plan G from another does.

Who it suits

Best if you travel, split the year between states, or want the freedom to see any provider without checking a network first.

Prescription Drug Plans

Medication coverage

Part D is standalone prescription coverage for people who stay with Original Medicare. Every plan publishes its own list of covered drugs, so the right plan depends entirely on the medicines you actually take.

Who it suits

Best if you're staying with Original Medicare — often paired with a Supplement plan.

Special Needs Plans

Built around one situation

Special Needs Plans are Medicare Advantage plans restricted to people in a defined situation: living with a specific chronic condition, qualifying for both Medicare and Medicaid, or living in an institution.

Who it suits

Best if you have a qualifying chronic condition, have both Medicare and Medicaid, or live in a nursing facility.
